Yellow Anglerfish (Antennarius sp.) – WYSIWYG Exotic Frogfish
The Yellow Anglerfish, commonly known as a Yellow Frogfish (Antennarius species), is one of the most fascinating and unusual predators available in the saltwater aquarium hobby. This incredible fish features a bright yellow body with textured skin that helps it blend perfectly into reef rock, sponges, and corals. With its unique shape and slow, deliberate movements, the Yellow Anglerfish is a true conversation piece and a standout addition to any specialty marine aquarium.
Anglerfish are famous for their incredible hunting strategy. They use a modified dorsal spine called an illicium, which acts like a fishing rod with a lure that wiggles in front of their mouth to attract unsuspecting prey. When a fish or shrimp gets too close, the anglerfish strikes with lightning speed, swallowing prey nearly as large as itself in a fraction of a second.
These fish are best kept in species-only or carefully planned predator aquariums, as they will eat any tankmate small enough to fit in their mouth. They thrive in stable aquariums with gentle flow, rock structures for perching, and regular feedings of appropriately sized marine fish or shrimp.
