Sargassum Triggerfish (Xanthichthys ringens) – Reef Safe Triggerfish
The Sargassum Triggerfish (Xanthichthys ringens), also known as the Redtail Triggerfish, is one of the most sought-after triggerfish for reef aquariums. Unlike many trigger species, this beautiful open-water trigger is known for its relatively peaceful temperament and reef-safe behavior, making it a popular choice for larger reef systems.
This striking fish features a silvery-blue body accented with fine spotting and subtle patterning, highlighted by a distinctive reddish tail that gives the species its common name. Its sleek body shape and constant open-water swimming behavior add energy and movement to larger marine aquariums.
In the wild, Sargassum Triggerfish inhabit the open water around reefs and feed primarily on plankton and small invertebrates. In the aquarium, they adapt well to a varied diet that includes mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and other high-quality meaty marine foods. They are active swimmers and require ample open swimming space along with stable water conditions.
Because of their generally peaceful nature, Sargassum Triggerfish can be kept with a wide variety of reef-safe fish and are one of the few triggerfish commonly kept in reef aquariums with corals.
