Description

Peppermint Hogfish

The Peppermint Hogfish is a striking wrasse prized for its clean, candy-cane striped pattern — bold red and white horizontal bands that really pop in a well-lit tank. It’s native to the Pacific, and though it can be somewhat territorial, its temperament is generally described as semi-aggressive, making it a compelling addition to many marine aquariums.

Care & Tank Requirements

  • Care Level: Moderate.

  • Minimum Tank Size: ~ 75 gallons is strongly recommended for long-term health.

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: ~72–78°F (22–26°C)

    • Salinity: ~1.020–1.025 SG

    • pH: ~8.1–8.4

    • Alkalinity: ~8–12 dKH

  • Aquascape: Provide ample rockwork, caves, and crevices. This species also appreciates a deep sand bed, and may bury itself when stressed.

  • Lid Recommendation: Yes — a tight-fitting lid is a must, since hogfish are known to jump.

Behavior & Compatibility

  • The Peppermint Hogfish can be territorial, especially as it matures.

  • It’s generally reef-compatible, but caution is advised: small invertebrates (like shrimp) may be at risk, especially if introduced after the hogfish is established.

  • Most hobbyists recommend keeping only one individual per tank.

Diet

  • Carnivorous: Thrives on a variety of meaty foods — mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, even enriched frozen preparations.

  • Feeding Schedule: Multiple small feedings per day mimic its natural hunting behavior and help maintain its vibrancy and health.

Size & Lifespan

  • Adult Size: Around 4–5″

  • Lifespan: With proper care, hogfish are hardy and can live several years in captivity.

Unique Traits & Notes

  • As with many hogfish, B. sepiacaudus may be a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals can change sex over time.

  • Because of their active and curious nature, they make for a visually engaging centerpiece — almost always on the move, exploring the rockwork.

  • Their bold striping is not just for show: it’s part of what makes them such a prized ornamental fish.

The Peppermint Hogfish makes for a stand-out addition: unique coloration, active behavior, and a reputation for being relatively hardy compared to rarer wrasse species.
