Camel Shrimp (Rhynchocinetes durbanensis)
The Camel Shrimp, also known as the Hinge-Beak Shrimp, is a uniquely patterned saltwater shrimp recognized for its bright red coloration with bold white striping and arched “camel-like” back. Active and eye-catching, this shrimp is a popular choice for fish-only and specialty marine aquariums.
Key Features
-
Bright red body with striking white bands
-
Distinctive arched back and long antennae
-
Active scavenger that adds movement to the aquarium
-
Hardy in stable marine systems
Care & Compatibility
Camel Shrimp adapt well to fish-only and non-reef aquariums. While often mistaken for peppermint shrimp, they are not considered reef-safe and may nip at soft corals, zoanthids, and anemones. They are best kept with peaceful to semi-aggressive fish and should not be housed with predators that may eat shrimp.
Diet
An omnivorous scavenger, the Camel Shrimp readily accepts frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, pellets, flakes, and other meaty marine foods. Regular feeding helps reduce unwanted coral nipping.
