The Banggai Cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) is one of the most recognizable and beginner-friendly saltwater fish in the aquarium hobby. Native to the Banggai Islands of Indonesia, this species is admired for its bold black-and-silver striped pattern, elongated fins, and elegant swimming style.
Unlike many reef fish, the Banggai Cardinalfish is relatively calm and slow-moving, making it an excellent choice for peaceful reef aquariums. It typically hovers among rockwork, corals, or sea urchin spines in the wild, and displays similar behavior in aquariums. Its striking coloration and unique body shape make it a standout addition to both reef and fish-only marine systems.
Banggai Cardinalfish grow to about 3 inches and adapt well to aquarium life when provided with stable water conditions and a varied diet. They readily accept frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and quality prepared foods, making them easy to feed compared to many other ornamental marine fish.
